Liverpool dismissed head coach Arne Slot on Saturday following an end-of-season review that cut short his tenure after two years at Anfield.
The 47-year-old Dutchman parted ways with the club with immediate effect.
This comes after a difficult season that saw the team fall to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League.
The poor run included 19 defeats across all competitions.
It also triggered growing discontent among fans, alongside reported dressing room friction involving forward Mohamed Salah.
The club confirmed the decision in an official statement released on Saturday afternoon.
“That this was a difficult decision for us to make as a club goes without saying,” it said.
“The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant.”
Liverpool said Slot made a meaningful and successful contribution to the club.
“As such, our appreciation for everything he has achieved could not be greater, particularly as it was underpinned by a work ethic, a diligence and a level of expertise which further underlined our view that he is a leader in his field.”
Slot took over from Jürgen Klopp in June 2024. He achieved immediate success, securing the club’s 20th league title during his first season.
However, despite heavy squad investment ahead of his second year, the team struggled to maintain that momentum, prompting ownership to seek a new direction.
The club statement said officials did not make the decision lightly but believed it was necessary for “future progress”.
“We can only wish Arne well in the next stage of his coaching career, with our expectation being that he will continue to be successful,” it said.
“We do so in the knowledge that his Liverpool legacy is intact.
“It will become yet more meaningful in the years and decades to come.
Liverpool said they concluded the team needs a new direction to improve its performance.
