Pretoria — President Cyril Ramaphosa has suspended National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola. He has appointed Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane as acting head of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The move comes after Masemola appeared in court on charges linked to an alleged tender issue.

Leadership change at SAPS

Ramaphosa said the suspension is precautionary. It will remain in place while the legal process continues. He added that the decision was needed to protect the integrity of the police service. Dimpane will now lead SAPS in the interim. She has held senior roles in financial management within the organisation.

Investigation into tender

The case relates to a tender reportedly worth more than R200 million. Authorities are investigating whether proper procedures were followed. The matter has raised concerns about governance and accountability within SAPS. The presidency stressed that the suspension does not mean Masemola is guilty.

Focus on stability

Government said the priority is to maintain stability in the police service.South Africa continues to face high crime levels. Leadership within SAPS remains a key issue. Analysts say the appointment of an acting commissioner will help ensure continuity while the case is resolved.
